Trauma & PTSD
Expert psychiatric evaluation and medication management to regulate the stress response, restore sleep, and improve emotional regulation after traumatic experiences.
Approaches Used
- Medication Management
- EMDR-informed
- DBT
- Trauma-Informed Care
What this often looks like
- Your body reacts before your mind has decided anything is wrong
- Sleep is broken by dreams you cannot always remember afterwards
- Ordinary sounds, smells or dates take you somewhere you did not choose to go
- You keep your back to the wall, literally, and scan rooms without meaning to
- You have organised your life around not being reminded
What the first appointment covers
You are never required to narrate what happened in order to be treated. The evaluation establishes how the past is affecting the present — sleep, startle, avoidance, mood, concentration — at whatever level of detail you choose. Trauma-informed practice means the pace belongs to you, and that a first appointment which leaves you shaken is a failed appointment, not a thorough one.
How it is treated here
Medication does not erase memory, and any account that suggests otherwise is selling something. What it can do is lower the physiological alarm enough that therapy becomes usable and sleep becomes possible: certain antidepressant classes are used for the core symptoms, and specific agents are used for trauma nightmares. Alongside that, the work draws on DBT skills for managing states that feel unmanageable in the moment.
What to expect, and when
Sleep and nightmare frequency often improve first, sometimes within a few weeks. Hypervigilance and avoidance change more slowly and respond better to combined medication and therapy than to either alone. This is not fast work, and being told otherwise is a reason to be suspicious.
Questions patients ask
Do I have to talk about what happened?
No. You decide what is said and when. Effective psychiatric care for trauma is possible without a detailed account, and pressing for one before there is trust does more harm than good.
Is video safe for trauma work?
For many people it is preferable: you remain in a place you control, you can end the call, and there is no journey home afterwards while still raw. If at any point in-person care would serve you better, I will say so and help you find it.
Can trauma from childhood still be treated decades later?
Yes. The nervous system does not apply a statute of limitations, and neither does treatment. Long-standing trauma often presents as depression, anxiety or substance use rather than as flashbacks, which is one reason it goes untreated for years.
